  10. Picture Sucker and Picture Sucker Pro are 32 bit multi-threaded Winsock and WIN32
  11. compatible applications which execute on both Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms.
  12. These products were developed for the internet surfer who is a collector of fine
  13. internet artwork. These programs connect to any NNTP compatible news server
  14. and will automatically download UUENCODED pictures to your hard disk.
  15. The programs may be run minimized and will run concurrently while you are using
  16. your web browser, mail system, news readers or other internet applications.
  17. The user is able to configure the
  18. programs to select news articles for download using a variety of selection criteria.
  19. With over 16,000 news groups available and around 300 of them catering to the
  20. "visual crowd" you cannot afford to waste connect time with manually initiated downloads.
  21. The Picture Sucker family of software was developed in Visual C++ running under a
  22. multiprocessor version of  Windows NT 3.51.
  23.  
  24. "Picture Sucker Pro" has several advanced features:
  25.  
  26.      * windows listbox selection of newsgroups to search
  27.      * history file to avoid duplicate downloads and crossposted articles
  28.      * improved download statistics on the run screen
  29.      * faster scanning of news groups for possible pictures
  30.      * files are stored in a subdirectory to avoid accidental program deletion
  31.  
  32. *** "Picture Sucker" will not operate correctly on Windows 3.x or 3.11. ***
  33.  
  34. This is because Picture Sucker is written as a full 32 bit multi-threaded
  35. winsock compliant application. Multithreading is only supported under
  36. Windows 95 and Windows NT.

  39. The program searches a list of user programmable news groups looking
  40. for articles ranging in length of approximately 500 to 8500 lines in length
  41. (most good pictures fall in this range) with the subject line containing the
  42. strings "1/1" or "01/01" ( this avoids downloading partial pictures ). Several
  43. other tests may be optionally applied as a selection criteria for downloads.

  45. This version connects to a user specified news server and uses only low
  46. level news commands that should be supported by any NNTP server.

  49. Getting Started With Picture Sucker:
  50.  
  51.     1.    unzip the supplied file into any desired directory preferably on a
  52.           hard disk with lots of free space. One overnite download may net
  53.           2000 pictures using about 200mb.  You should have this file
  54.           (help.txt) and sucker.exe.
  55.  
  56.     2.    You will have to use your news reader program and text editor to generate
  57.           a file called groups.txt. A default file will be generated the first time
  58.           you run Picture Sucker.
  59.           Add or remove news groups as required from this file.
  60.  
  61.     3.    dial up your internet service provider via the dialup networking option
  62.           in windows 95 or RAS in Windows NT.
  63.  
  64.     4.    when connected start sucker.exe
  65.  
  66.     5.    The setup window should appear.
  67.           Fill in your news server IP address. This should look something like
  68.           news.xyzcorp.com. Numeric fields for the IP address will not work.
  69.           Normally, the rest of the fields default settings will be a good
  70.           starting point. If your news server requires additional user
  71.           authentication, check the "required" box and fill in the username and
  72.           password supplied by your news service provider. Note: dont use this
  73.           unless it is required.

  75.     6.    From the main window just click on "start sucking" button. This
  76.           will connect to your news server and display status in the main
  77.           window areas on a regular basis.

  79.     7.    You may exit the program at any time during downloading. Be sure
  80.           to use the Close button, this will insure that all the history
  81.           and setup files are stored properly on the hard drive.

  83.     8.    Now that the program is setup, starting it again just requires
  84.           starting sucker.exe and clicking on the Start Sucking button.

  102.           all ok during intial installation. Click on OK, this will bring you to
  103.           the setup window.

  105.     5.    Fill in your news server IP address. This should look something like
  106.           news.xyzcorp.com. Numeric fields for the IP address will not work.
  107.           Normally, the rest of the fields default settings will be a good
  108.           starting point. If your news server requires additional user

  113.     6.    Click on OK. This will take you to the main picture sucker window.
  114.           Before you can download pictures, you will have to get a current
  115.           list of news groups from the news server.

  117.     7.    Click on the newsgroups button. This will advise you that you need
  118.           to click on the "refresh list" button. So... doit. This may take a
  119.           while as there are over 16000 news groups on some servers. The
  120.           title bar will give you a blow by blow description of what is
  121.           happening. You should see the left hand window fill up with a list
  122.           of every newsgroup available from your news server.

  124.     8.    After the groups are downloaded, the buttons will become enabled
  125.           once again. Select the groups you wish to search for articles by
  126.           double clicking on the group name in the left hand window, by
  127.           highlighting a group of groups using the ctrl key and mouse clicks
  128.           or by using the shift and arrow keys to select a group of groups.
  129.           Once a group of groups is selected, it may be subscribed to or
  130.           unsubscribed to be clicking on the --> or <-- buttons. The quickest
  131.           way to get started is to just click on the Defaults--> button. This
  132.           will scan the left hand window for groups of interesting subjects
  133.           and will move the groups to the right hand subscribed window. Now
  134.           click on OK. The groups will be stored in the newsrc file... this
  135.           may take a few seconds to complete the write to the hard disk.

  137.     9.    From the main window just click on "start sucking" button. This
  138.           will connect to your news server and display status in the main
  139.           window areas on a regular basis.

  181.       due to limit in the Windows 95 API. Under Windows NT, history is limited
  182.       by Picture Sucker to numbers between 250 and 50000 downloaded articles.
  183.     * download history is saved to disk every 50 pictures in case of power
  184.       failures during prolonged downloads
  185.     * program name which shows on toolbar when minimized is programmable for
  186.       those that wish to run the program minimized while at work. Suggested
  187.       title "4th Quarter Summary".
  188.     * groups may now be subscribed or unsubscribed by double clicking on the
  189.       individual group or by selecting a range of groups with the shift or control
  190.       keys in conjunction with the arrow keys
  191.     * pictures are now downloaded and stored in the subdirectory "pictures". This
  192.       should help prevent the unwanted deletion of Picture Sucker Pro.
  193.     * percentages are now displayed for progress through: groups, articles, and
  194.       download of a particular article.
  195.     * pictures that fail uudecode are saved in their raw text form in files
  196.       with names like WTF008E0ACC.TXT in the pictures subdirectory. These may be
  197.       decoded with other external decoders (such as base64) that are not yet
  198.       supported by Picture Sucker Pro. The number of these files generated
  199.       is listed on the run screen as "unknown format".
  200.     * Typical performance with a 28.8 modem and a good news server connection
  201.       is around 2000 pictures downloaded overnite.

  214.     Q:      how can I download files with different extensions?
  215.     A:      you can turn off the option to check for jpg and gif files and
  216.             it will then download anything that matches the rest of the
  217.             options.

  219.     Q:      how do I download multipart files?
  220.     A:      multipart files are really difficult.... I gave up on them because
  221.             it seemed that at least 1 piece was missing from the currently
  222.             posted news articles. You will get more pictures than you can ever
  223.             look at without wasting time on the multipart files. Use your news reader
  224.             to manually download the multiple part files if you really need them.

  226.     Q:      how do I tell if I need to set up the user name and password?
  227.     A:      Try with the authorization option not checked. If you see
  228.             something like "480 Authentication Required for Command" in the
  229.             message status window then you need to check the Required box on
  230.             the setup screen and enter you news server user name and password.
  231.             (the items are usually supplied to you by your internet service
  232.             provider).

  234.     Q:      how do I decode this file to get the file sucker.exe?
  235.     A:      Most mail programs have a decode option available. If not,
  236.             use your mail program to save this message as a text file. Then
  237.             you can use a program called uudecode to unpack the following
  238.             section. If all this escapes you, send me a message and I will
  239.             try sending you the executable directly as a mail attachment.

  241.     Q:      what files are required to run "Picture Sucker"
  242.     A:      at a bare minimum, you need sucker.exe and groups.txt. If the
  243.             program doesnt find the .ini file, it will present you with the
  244.             setup window and will create the file with your choices.
  245.             If you have "Picture Sucker Pro", all you need is the sucker.exe.
  246.             The rest will be generated once you setup the IP address of your news
  247.             server and refresh the list of news groups.
  248.  
  249.     Q:      what is the file format and content of groups.txt?
  250.     A:      this file is a list of all the news groups that you wish to search
  251.             for potential news articles fitting your selection criteria. It is
  252.             formated as a text file with each news group listed on a separate
  253.             line. (groups.txt is not used by Picture Sucker Pro, instead,
  254.             the list of all groups, subscribed or otherwise is stored in a
  255.             file called newsrc)

  277.             Use your existing news reader to locate groups that you
  278.             want to download pictures from and add these group names
  279.             to groups.txt with one group per line.

  283.     Q:      how come I don't get any pictures when I run the program?
  284.     A:      If your news provider is selectively censoring your news groups,
  285.             you may find that none of the groups listed in the groups.txt
  286.             file are available from your news provider. Try using your
  287.             regular news reader (winvn, netscape etc) to search for groups
  288.             that contain the material you wish to automatically download.
  289.             Make sure these groups are listed in the groups.txt file. If all
  290.             else fails, try looking for a public news provider that carries the
  291.             groups you are interested in. I found a good list using my
  292.             WEB browser and searching for NNRP.
  293.  
  294.     Q:      where do the pictures that are downloaded get stored?
  295.     A:      in the current directory, (the same one that contains sucker.exe)
  296.             Picture Sucker Pro stores all its downloaded files in a subdirectory
  297.             called "pictures". Version 19Jul96 moved pictures to a series of
  298.             subdirectories detailed in the mod notes above

  300.     Q:      how do I view these pictures?
  301.     A:      use a jpeg or gif viewer. There are many different ones available
  302.             on the net. I like LVIEW as it has lots of interesting editing
  303.             features available.

  305.     Q:      how can I order a version of "Picture Sucker Pro"?
  306.     A:      "Picture Sucker" (free version) is available from
  307.             several sites listed above. For the enhanced

  319.     Q:      Does it matter if I am using Win 95 with dial up networking
  320.             to access my Internet provider? DU networking is 32 bit.
  321.     A:      This will work just fine. Dialup networking under Windows 95
  322.             and RAS under Windows NT are the most common connections. For
  323.             those lucky enough to have a direct internet connection, this
  324.             should also work.

  326.     Q:      Can a news provider block use of this program?
  327.     A:      As far as a news server is concerned, this program looks just
  328.             like a news reading program. If you can download pictures
  329.             using winvn, free agent or netscape, or another generic NNTP news
  330.             reader, picture sucker should work. To the news server, it looks like
  331.             you are a very fast reader who stays up all night reading news
  332.             in the alt.binaries groups. :}
  333.  
  334.     Q:      Does "pix_suck.ini" need to be in the windows directory?
  335.     A:      No, everything stays in one directory... If you want to give
  336.             it to a friend, just give them everything in the directory.
  337.             (you dont need to give them pix_suck.ini as this may contain
  338.              your username and password for news server access).

  340.     Q:      When I go to the Main Screen I cannot type in any of the
  341.             options such as NewsGroup, News Server, etc.  Am I doing
  342.             something wrong?
  343.     A:      The main window consists of status displays only. These are
  344.             used to indicate the progress of picture sucker during the
  345.             download process. If you press the SETUP button on the main
  346.             screen, you will get the setup screen. This is where you need to
  347.             enter the IP address of your news provider. The default settings
  348.             for the rest of the check boxes should work as a starting point.
  349.             You may need to check the Required Box and enter a news server
  350.             username and password (see question above) but most news servers
  351.             allow access to local users without this extra authorization.
  352.  
  353.     Q:      How can I tell if the program is working and downloading pictures?
  354.     A:      You should see a message like "line 243 of 723 ( 33% )"
  355.             that increments every few seconds until it gets to 100%.
  356.             This indicates that the article was downloaded. If the decode
  357.             option is checked, picture sucker will attempt to uudecode
  358.             the file into whatever the original filename was listed as.
  359.             The file will be placed in the same directory as the sucker.exe.
  360.             If the file is not uuencoded (netscape encodes files in a
  361.             format called base64) then no output file (or an empty file)
  362.             may result. Keep trying, most of the pictures on the news
  363.             servers I have access to are uuencoded. In the Picture Sucker Pro,
  364.             files that cannot be decoded by uudecode will be stored in their
  365.             original format with file names like WTF003DF.TXT. You can then try
  366.             and decode these using other decoding programs available off the net.
  367.  
  368.             Versions after 19Jul96 have progress bars that indicate activity as well
  369.             as sound. All articles downloaded are saved and optionally decoded.
